Juan Gonzalez’s first stop today was to make his final mortgage payment to Housatonic Habitat for Humanity. On hand to share in today’s celebration was Habitat Board of Director’s Member John Gonski of People’s United Bank – Brookfield branch.
“We always paid our mortgage first,” the Danbury resident said. “We didn’t use the money for diners or other things. We were planning for the day when we could own our home.” That day was 20 years after a team of volunteers helped build the Gonzales home. “I wish I could thank everyone who worked on the home so long ago. They were all ages. They shared in the joy we felt in moving into our home. I would like to thank them all for making that dream possible.”
Sitting around the dinner table last night, Juan said the family was very much aware of the importance of making the last payment. “My wife, Maria, and I are so happy.” Juan, who is known for the beautiful garden he has planted on his property, said he was going home to plan even more seeds.
